Why do you need to register a company logo?

To gain the attention of your customers, your company has to be completely attractive. You have to assure that consumers will immediately recognize your products and be inclined to buy those products without giving them a second thought. But how?

The solution lies in branding. As per the American Marketing Association (AMA), branding can relate to anything concerning the names, terms, signs, symbols, or designs used to separate your company from its competitors. Whenever it comes to branding, your company logo is the best weapon. So what is a company logo? How can you protect it?

What is the company logo?

A logo can be represented as a type of unique brand image that a limited company or any other business can create to identify its particular products and services.

After creating this image, a brand becomes much more easily recognisable to the general public and distinguishable from other goods and businesses. By registering a company logo in the UK with the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) as a trademark, you can protect it.

What is the reason?

It's a huge amount of pressure to link an entire brand down to a particular symbol.

How are you supposed to make sure that your new design will help to increase your brand appeal?

According to Matt Mickiewicz, co-founder of the web publishing firm SitePoint, creating an effective logo leads to a few basic points:

  1. Make it unique: Avoid excessively used symbols such as globes and arrows, and try to create your unique color scheme.
  1. Make it adaptable: Your logo wants to be able to work for a wide variety of platforms. Just ask yourself: will it look good on a business card as it will on a billboard?
  1. Make it timeless: You'd like your company to be around more than a couple of years. To assure brand sustainability, develop a logo that appears like it will stand the test of time.
  1. Make it appropriate: Your target group must be able to completely identify your company logo. That means it must reflect your company values and culture.

You must keep in mind that there is no legal requirement to register your company logo, but it's definitely worth your time. If you'd like to protect it from being used by other people, you will have to register it as a trademark. To meet the legal criteria of the Intellectual Property Office, a trademark has to be a distinctive word, logo, or image.
